Clayton and Virginia Tyler Williams
The late Judge Clayton R. Williams started a private law practice in Alton, Illinois in 1954. He later served for many years as the Executive Director of the Madison County Legal Services. During many of those years, he also served as an officer or member of the Boards of the Madison County Urban League, the NAACP, the Alton-Wood River Bar Association and the Madison County Bar Association. In 1973, he received a groundbreaking appointment to the Illinois Third Judicial Circuit Court District as an Associate Judge in Madison and Bond Counties. He served in that position until his retirement in 1987.
The late Mrs. Virginia Tyler Williams began teaching in the Alton Community School District in 1951 at the former Central Jr. High School. She later taught at Lovejoy, Humboldt, and Milton Elementary Schools in Alton. Mrs. Williams was recognized throughout the Alton community as a highly dedicated and effective educator and as a mentor to other teachers and colleagues until she retired in 1982.
The CVW Foundation's Founding
The Clayton and Virginia Williams Foundation was incorporated in 2016 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization to develop and support initiatives and projects that are designed to advance justice, promote fair and equal law enforcement, improve public education and promote informed civic involvement
The Foundation is organized into three areas of advocacy which represent the Williams' values and principles.
